The Only Green Bean Casserole Recipe You Need (Because We’re Upgrading the Classic)
Green bean casserole is one of those dishes everyone pretends they know how to make… but let’s be honest, most of us are following the same recipe printed on the back of a soup can. And hey — no shame. But if you’re here, it’s because you want something better without doing the absolute most.
This version is based on the classic AllRecipes casserole we all know and love, but with a Basic Ass Cooking twist:
✨ Fresh onion
✨ Fresh garlic
✨ Fresh green beans in addition to the canned ones
✨ The same flavor — just elevated
The result?
A casserole that tastes homemade without being high-maintenance. It’s a little fresher, a little more flavorful, and still easy enough that you can make it while dodging relatives and sipping wine.
Perfect for holidays, potlucks, Sunday dinners, or whenever you want to feel like you’ve got your life together (even if you don’t).
Let’s cook.
Ingredients
- 2 cans (14.5 oz each) cut green beans, drained
- 1 heaping cup of fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1/2 cup diced fresh onion
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- ¾-1 cup whole milk (amount varies based on how much fresh green beans you add)
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional but highly recommended)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup French-fried onions (plus extra for topping because obviously)
Green Bean Casserole Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Sauté your fresh veggies:
Heat a little oil or butter in a pan and sauté the sliced onion for about 3–4 minutes. Add garlic and fresh green beans and cook another 3–4 minutes until they soften slightly.
(This step makes you look like a real chef even though you’re still using canned green beans. We love balance.)
Mix the good stuff:
In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and French-fried onions. Stir in the sautéed veggies and the canned green beans.
Into the oven it goes:
Transfer everything to a baking dish.
Bake for 25 minutes, uncovered. Check and return to the oven to bake longer until the sauce is your desired consistency.
Top & finish:
Add extra fried onions on top (don’t be shy).
Bake another 5–10 minutes until golden brown and calling your name.
Serve hot and accept all compliments.
Even the ones you don’t feel like you deserve.
